Mariam Mojdehi - Living Future 18
The city of Santa Monica is building the first Living Building Challenge in Southern California. It will also be one of the first municipally owned Living Building Challenge projects, and likely the most densely populated building to earn the Certification. These reasons create unique challenges for the design team, but also as provide an exciting opportunity to advocate for better design as a Public Good. Through this project, the design team has advocated for greener building codes, greater transparency in the public process, innovative precedents for design build projects, and a better understanding of how material selection impacts environmental justice.
This session will focus on a case study of the challenges and opportunities presented by a municipal Living Building Challenge project. The City of Santa Monica will introduce the project and its unique design features, as well discuss the impact that the public review process plays in creating a more transparent approach to the design and construction process.
