Progress

Architecture enriches our lives emotionally, psychologically, and adds quality to our communities. It breaks down barriers and provides people a place to feel safe, build memories, and grow. FF&P is enthusiastic and hopeful to see organizations like Southern California Chapter for The National Organization of Minority Architects seek progress towards education and careers for minority architects who have been underrepresented.
Providing youth with a wide range of career paths in architecture and various related fields of study is crucial. SoCal NOMA offers an annual summer camp providing hands on experience and implements the affect architectural design has on our communities. The camp is taught primarily but not exclusively by a diverse demographic of architects, engineers, interior designers, and urban planners.
FF&P had the opportunity to volunteer with SoCal NOMA’s 2018 summer camp, Rams Landing Neighborhood Renewal Project. Day 2 focused on Site Planning & Design, mentors gave feedback to campers' on their homeless housing solutions homework assignment. Followed by a field trip to the Rams Stadium, site planning, design, drawings, and reviewing the process of permit requirements.
Students were given a presentation on planning and programming and were then expected to develop bubble diagrams based on their building types. FF&P mentors helped campers develop floor plans and elevations.
Additionally, SoCal NOMA provides internships and a job board offering various levels of experience from internships to senior level positions. The goal is to expand the diversity within this industry and showcase the influence culture has on design.
